The accident happened early in the morning, and a man riding a motorcycle died because of it.
At the final court hearing on April 11, the prosecution asked Judge Kim Ji-young of the Seoul Central District Court to sentence Ahn to 15 years in prison. Ahn was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, drunk driving, and running away after the accident. These are serious crimes under the Road Traffic Act in South Korea.
The prosecutors explained why they asked for such a long sentence. They said that the damage has not been fixed or made up for, and that many people in the public have sent messages asking for strong punishment. They also said the crime was very serious because someone died, and that Ahn needs to take responsibility for what he did.
During the hearing, Ahn spoke to the court and said he was very sorry. He said, "I sincerely kneel and apologize to the victim who lost his life. I also feel deeply sorry for the family who must be going through so much pain." He promised to reflect deeply on his actions and said he would try to become a better person by helping others in society.
The accident happened in February. Ahn had been drinking alcohol and was driving a Mercedes-Benz car in Nonhyeon-dong, a neighborhood in Gangnam. He crossed over the center line of the road, crashed into another car, and then hit the delivery man while trying to run away.
At the time of the crash, Ahn’s blood alcohol level was 0.221 percent. This is far above the legal limit and is enough to get his driver’s license taken away.
