[서화목] 7.0 magnitude earthquake in waters near Turkey and Greece

Amid a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in waters near Turkey and Greece, no damage to local Koreans has been confirmed.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 31st, a survey of Korean residents' organizations and companies confirmed that there has been no damage to Koreans so far.

One Korean resident lives on the Greek island of Samos, 200 in Izmir, Turkey, and five in Kusadashi.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "We asked the Korean people to be careful about aftershocks through the websites of the Embassy of Greece and the Embassy of Turkey and the safety notice of the Novel Network Service (SNS)."

"We will maintain contact with the Korean community, continue to understand additional damage and provide necessary consular assistance," he said.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on the 30th (local time), a 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred 14 kilometers from Nenno Karlovacion on the Greek island of Samos off the coast of Izmir in western Turkey at around 3 p.m.

Turkey's Disaster Crisis Management Agency (AFAD) announced the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.6, with at least 389 aftershocks and 33 aftershocks above magnitude 4.0.

Twenty-five people were confirmed dead and at least 804 were injured, the AFP reported.

Two teenagers have also died on the Greek island of Samos, confirming a total of 27 deaths so far.

Some coastal areas of Izmir and Samos Island were flooded by tsunami from the earthquake, and one of the dead was drowned after being swept away by waves while fleeing the quake.

At least 743 people were injured in Izmir, five in neighboring Manisa Province, 54 in Aydin and two in Balekeshir, according to the AFP.
