In response to increasing concerns about air pollution, local schools have begun installing high-performance air purifiers in classrooms and common areas. The move comes after several days of high fine dust levels, prompting parents and educators to demand better protection for students.
Fine dust, or PM2.5, is known to cause respiratory issues, especially in children and the elderly.Exposure to high levels of fine particles can lead to asthma, bronchitis, and even long-term lung damage.
“We are prioritizing the health and safety of our students,” said Choi Eun-jung, head of the city’s education department.“Clean air should be a basic part of the learning environment.”
The new air purifiers are equipped with HEPA filters and real-time air quality monitors. They automatically adjust their settings depending on pollution levels inside the room.
In addition, windows in many classrooms will now be fitted with fine-dust blocking screens, and students will be encouraged to wear masks on high-risk days.
Parents have welcomed the decision.“My son has allergies, so I’m relieved that his school is taking this seriously,” said Kim Ji-won, a parent of a third grader.
Some schools are also incorporating air quality education into their science and health classes.Teachers hope this will help students understand how pollution affects the body and how they can take action to protect the environment.
The education office plans to complete air purifier installation in all public schools by early next year.Officials believe the effort will not only protect student health but also raise awareness about the importance of clean air in everyday life.
