According to the city’s Department of Environmental Services, improper recycling and contamination have been major challenges in recent years. When recyclables are mixed with food waste or other materials, they often end up being sent to landfills instead of being reused.
“The new bins are designed to make recycling easier and more accurate,” said Lee Hyun-woo, the director of the project.“They guide users with a screen that shows which item goes where, and they even give feedback if something is placed incorrectly.”
The smart bins are also equipped with compactors, which help reduce the volume of waste and cut down on collection frequency. In addition, some of the bins offer digital rewards, such as small points or discounts at local stores, to encourage participation.
So far, the bins have been installed in 20 locations, including parks, subway stations, and shopping districts.City officials plan to expand the program to 100 locations by the end of the year.
Residents have responded positively to the initiative.“It’s really helpful, especially when you’re not sure how to sort something,” said Jung Hye-jin, a university student.“I think people are more willing to recycle when it’s made simple and clear.”
The city hopes that with these smart solutions, it can reduce waste, increase recycling rates, and move one step closer to becoming a zero-waste city.
