"If the video call screen gets blurry, your voice gets 3 times louder"

When you have video calls or video conferences, you often raise your voice because your opponent doesn't seem to understand well.

A research team at the Donders Brain Behavior Research Institute at Radbaut University in the Netherlands said on the 13th that people behave the same way in video calls as if they move loudly or make loud noises to communicate well in noisy places or in complex environments.

The research team asked 20 pairs of participants to have daily conversations through video calls for 40 minutes. In the middle of the conversation, the video quality was deliberately lowered to blur the screen, and then the participants' reactions were examined.

Participants moved their arms and bodies more as the video quality declined. When the information was not delivered enough through the video, he tried to convey the meaning with exaggerated movements. His voice has grown three times louder. However, as the image quality continued to decline, participants were found to perform their usual body movements again. On the other hand, the voice volume remained the same. The psychology that exaggerated gestures are not very useful in communication, but voices are still valid worked.

"When people talk on the phone, they make gestures as usual and increase the intensity of their voices when they can't see their gestures," researcher James Trujillo said. "Communication is not just a linguistic aspect, but an integrated system of vision and hearing."
