"I'm shocked to see 'When My Love Blooms'..." I wanted to properly introduce the world of his work."
The movie directed by Wang Jiawei transcends time. Thirty years later, his movie is still hung in theaters, and young men and women in their 20s fill the seats. His representative works, such as "Daddy Jeongjeon" and "Hwayang Yeonhwa," are said to have portrayed the moment of love like fire and the feeling of loss after the moment passes.
Director Wang's critical collection of the world of works, "Time of Wangawi" (Moin Group, 19), will be published on the 17th. It is a translation of "Auteur of Time" published in the United Kingdom in 2005. In particular, director Yoon Je-kyun, who mobilized the audience for "Ssangman Bay" with the films "Haeundae" (2009) and "International Market" (2014), participated as a planning committee member, drawing attention. Director Yoon and Kim Joong-seop, a professor of Korean literature at Kyung Hee University, met at Kyung Hee University in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul on the 6th.
Director Yoon participated in the book production after meeting director Wang. The two met in Hong Kong in 2016 to co-produce the film, but the work was canceled due to the Korean Wave ban. Director Yoon said, "I was shocked to express the mournful love between men and women without any provocative scenes after watching 'Hwayang Yeonhwa'. "I participated because I wanted to properly introduce the world of his work," he said.
The book contains a number of undisclosed still photos of director Wang, owned by Moin Group, a domestic distributor of director Wang's films. Director Wang was particularly strict about choosing photos. Director Yoon and the publisher suggested eight versions of the book cover to director Wang, but all of them were rejected. The final front cover is the side of his face sent by director Wang, and the back cover is the back of Surichen (Jang Man-wi) climbing the stairs in Hwayangyeonhwa. Coach Yoon said, "I couldn't complain because he had a different eye. The cover photo shows what kind of person he is," he said.
In the process of the reduction, the relationship between China and Hong Kong was considered. Hong Kong director Wang from Shanghai metaphorically expressed the relationship between China and Hong Kong in a number of films. Professor Kim said, "This year is the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, so I paid attention to every word."
The attraction of the book is that it details the factors that influenced the world of director Wang's work. It analyzes in detail how the literary characteristics of the writers he loved, such as Manuel Puig and Dazai Osamu, were reflected in the film.
"When 'Hero' swept the world, director Wang's 'Fierce Boy' came out. It broke the expectation that the action would be like a hero's true self. He is a director who has elevated Hong Kong films, which were highly commercial, to the level of art. I hope it will be an opportunity to deeply understand his storytelling and mise-sen in the movie." (Director Yoon)
