In an effort to create a more sustainable and livable urban environment, the city government has launched a new rooftop garden initiative. This program encourages residents and building owners to transform unused rooftop spaces into green oases.
The initiative comes as part of a broader campaign to combat the effects of climate change, including the rising temperatures caused by the urban heat island effect.Experts have noted that green rooftops can significantly reduce indoor temperatures, lower energy consumption, and help filter air pollutants.
“Rooftop gardens are more than just pretty spaces,” said Kim Min-jun, an environmental planner for the city.“They are practical solutions to serious urban issues like air pollution, heat, and lack of green areas.”
The city will offer financial support and technical assistance to residents who apply to join the program.Workshops on urban gardening, composting, and rooftop safety will also be held in local community centers throughout the fall.
In addition to environmental benefits, the city hopes the project will promote mental well-being and social connection.Urban dwellers often lack access to nature, and these rooftop spaces could serve as peaceful retreats or even small community farms.
One local resident, Park Soo-jin, has already applied to transform the rooftop of her apartment building.“I’ve always dreamed of having a small garden,” she said. “It’s exciting to think that I can grow herbs and vegetables in the middle of the city.”
The pilot phase will begin this September, with plans to expand citywide by next year.If successful, the rooftop garden initiative could serve as a model for other densely populated cities around the world.
