City Installs Smart Streetlights to Save Energy and Improve Safety

In a move to modernize public infrastructure and promote energy efficiency, the city has begun replacing traditional streetlights with smart LED lighting systems.These intelligent lights are equipped with motion sensors and dimming features that automatically adjust brightness based on real-time activity and natural light levels.

City officials say the new lighting system can reduce electricity consumption by up to 60% compared to conventional streetlights.In addition to energy savings, the smart lights are expected to cut maintenance costs and extend the lifespan of each unit.

“Smart lighting is a small but powerful step toward building a greener city,” said Project Manager Seo Jin-woo.“These lights only brighten when needed, which means less energy is wasted during quiet hours.”

The lights also contribute to public safety.When motion is detected—such as pedestrians or vehicles approaching—the lights instantly brighten to ensure better visibility.This has already led to a noticeable decrease in minor accidents in some test areas.

Residents in the pilot neighborhoods have praised the new system.“It feels safer when I walk my dog at night,” said resident Lee Sun-young.“And knowing that we’re saving energy makes it even better.”

The city plans to install over 10,000 smart streetlights over the next two years, starting with school zones, parks, and residential areas.A mobile app will also be launched to allow citizens to report malfunctioning lights and monitor energy usage in their area.

Urban planners believe smart lighting could pave the way for even more connected infrastructure, such as smart traffic lights and environmental sensors.With growing concerns over climate change and sustainability, small innovations like this may have a big long-term impact.
