The city has announced a major expansion of pedestrian-only zones in an effort to make urban spaces safer, greener, and more enjoyable for residents.Starting next month, several busy streets in the downtown area will be closed to vehicle traffic on weekends and public holidays.
The decision comes after a six-month pilot program showed strong support from citizens and local businesses.Surveys revealed that pedestrian zones led to increased foot traffic, improved air quality, and a stronger sense of community.
“Our goal is to design a city for people, not just for cars,” said Mayor Han Ji-hoon during a press conference on Thursday.“When people walk more, they live healthier lives—and our city becomes more vibrant and sustainable.”
As part of the initiative, the city will install more benches, shade structures, bike racks, and water fountains along key walking routes.Public art and small performance stages will also be set up to create a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
Local shop owners have reacted positively to the changes.“We’ve seen more families and tourists coming in on weekends,” said Yoon Da-seul, who owns a bakery near one of the pedestrian zones.“It feels like the whole neighborhood is becoming more alive.”
To encourage walking as a daily habit, the city plans to launch a mobile app that tracks walking routes, steps, and even rewards users with small perks. There will also be walking festivals and guided neighborhood tours offered throughout the year.
Officials believe that creating a walkable environment can reduce car dependency, lower carbon emissions, and improve public health. If successful, the program could serve as a long-term model for other urban centers aiming to improve quality of life through smarter city planning.
